The House of Lords has voted 304 to 160 to amend the unfair dismissal proposals in the Employment Rights Bill.
The amendments remove the ‘initial period’, akin to a statutory probation period where a light touch dismissal process could be used.
Instead, the qualifying service requirement is proposed to be reduced from the current 2 years to 6 months.
The Bill will ‘ping pong’ back to the House of Commons but as the amendments go against the current government’s manifesto pledge to make unfair dismissal a day one right, it’s likely that these amendments will ultimately be rejected.
